The Journey begins when the doctor gives you the diagnosis “It’s Cancer”.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in December of 2014. I met with my doctors, had the biopsy, surgeries, met my oncologist, had a port put in.
And then it was February 2015 and time for chemo.
My oncologist explained that the type of chemo I would be having would make my hair fall out after about 17 days. Hmmm. My dear friend Mary began questioning me about what I was going to do.
My answer, “I don’t know.”
I was a woman that just could not do scarves and hats. So my friend knew I needed to have a wig and it was important to me to have head covering. Mary began contacting other women, searching for answers, trying to find where to go. All this for me, her friend. Our journey to find a wig for me had begun.
She found that the closest place was down in Cambridge at the Harbor Room and that “maybe” they would have a wig for me. Mary made all the arrangements, drove me down to Cambridge and we found one that would work…for the time being.
Mary had also learned about Jan’s in Rush City. Unfortunately, we missed Jan by a couple of days. She had just left for an extended break to warmer weather and would not be back until April. Finally, after almost 2 months with the temporary wig, Mary made all the arrangements and drove me to see Jan. I was able to purchase a wig that fit me and matched my hair color.
Kicking cancer is busy work. The treatments can make you sick, your hair can fall out, you have to deal with insurance, paper work, bills, are worried about your loved ones and trying to still live life. And some of us kind of want some hair to help us feel good.
Mary’s passion to help me find a wig brought us to this project, Wigs for the Cure. We knew that others in our community that are fighting cancer with chemo would also need wigs. Mary began collecting wigs, we began talking and planning putting ideas into motion. We found other women in our community that wanted to help and they pitched in to make this a reality.
Our mission is to provide wigs to the chemo patients of East Central Minnesota at no cost, right here, close to home.
