We are excited to announce the official launch of our project “Wigs for the Cure” at the Relay for Life of Kanabec County event tomorrow June 10, 2016.
Our mission is to provide wigs to the chemo patients of East Central Minnesota at no cost, right here, close to home.
We wanted to have a location in Mora where women that lost their hair during chemo would be able to get a wig at no cost without having to search and travel long distances. Our goal was that with the comfort and caring of a local hair stylist they would be able to select a style, color and fit specifically for them with the option of taking the wig to their own stylist. For a lot of us, looking like your old self is very uplifting, encourages you to get out with your family and friends and helps you get through your treatments.
My dear friend Mary had already gathered some new and used wigs. We needed a place to have the wigs cut, trimmed, and styled and where used wigs would be sanitized and freshened up. We also needed a pleasant, comfortable place for trying them on and getting them fit in environment of privacy.
Mary contacted Linda Pierson, owner of Linda’s Hair Design in Mora, MN and asked her if she would be interested in helping out. Linda very generously agreed to to take on the project. Linda built a relationship with a wig supplier in the event new wigs were needed, gathered supplies and equipment, and her landlord donated the space to house the wig room.
Last weekend, June 4th, Mary painted the wig room at Linda’s a very soft and soothing blush color. This week Mary found a lovely cabinet to house extra wigs and/or supplies. And there is a whole story behind the cabinet that is not done yet…more on that when we post again.
